Aug. 14th, 2011 04:54 pmI promised I'd let people see the paintings I've been working on all summer.
( These aren't all of them but they're the ones I'm most comfortable with )

Aug. 13th, 2011 01:39 pmI was going through my youngest sister's DVDs and I came across Cinderella 3: A Twist in time. I realized I'd never actually watched it and figured there'd be worse ways to spend an evening.
And it was actually mostly OK. The animation was solid overall and actually pretty neat at points, and the Prince is suddenly the most hilarious thing.

And this is now my response to everything.

Jul. 30th, 2011 05:04 pmSo my parents are cleaning their storage space and getting rid of useless things.
And they happened upon the box of stuffed toys that I packed away when I moved. And the thing is, I can't take them because I don't even have enough space for the things I already have. But I'd be loath to have them just thrown away because some of them have sentimental value and the ones that don't are relatively new and in pristine condition (having been bought by me in my teens for decoration and not for playing with).
Then again, maybe it's time to learn to throw things away. Or at least book a flea market table.

Niin ja Harry Potter
Jul. 24th, 2011 11:03 pmSaw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 today. Definitely one of the better Potter movies, if not the best. (hard to judge before I've seen it a few more times)

Jul. 18th, 2011 12:15 amI spent wasted spent most of today watching Tiger & Bunny. I thought I'd check it out since I've been hearing so much about it lately.
It wasn't exactly what I expected based on the near-universal squee I'd seen in my travels around the Internet, but for some reason I kept watching until I ran out of episodes. The supporting cast is adorable and even the leads became kind of endearing after 11 episodes or so, so I guess it's an ok show.

Jul. 13th, 2011 12:44 pmI am sorry, Robert Downey Jr. You will never be Sherlock Holmes to me. I was considering seeing the new movie for Stephen Fry as Mycroft, but I just saw the trailer and it killed my interest.
I get the feeling I might be able to enjoy these movies if they were just inspired by Holmes and the main character was called something else entirely. I know the whole point is that it's supposed to be a re-imagining for a 21th century audience, with lots of explosions and gunfire, but it just doesn't feel right to me.

We think http://mipeltaja.livejournal.com/ is written by a woman (80%).
I'm oddly disappointed by this result. I didn't realize my writing style was this feminine.

Jul. 3rd, 2011 01:44 pmI have this odd habit: I "collect" nice-sounding names. I don't know why I do it; I rarely need to name anything. I've never had a pet and do not plan on having kids, at least not anytime soon. I don't even name my computers, which I understand is a major nerd faux pas.
This post was brought on by the realization that "Johan" is a very nice name and OH GOD I WILL NEVER USE THESE NAMES FOR ANYTHING WHY DO I KEEP A LIST.

Jun. 15th, 2011 12:42 amThe folks at Telltale Games are evil, evil people.
That, and I'm an idiot for playing through 3 episodes of the game in one day when I should have made them last me until the 23rd, when the last episode will be released. I don't even have the excuse of being new to Telltale's shenanigans; I know they like to end the second-to-last episode of a season on an unpleasant sort of cliffhanger, and I still expected it to be all right.
Decent game, though. Not necessarily very challenging, but the story is certainly engaging.
I kind of wish I had WoW game time right now. I don't miss the game much, which is a bit of a bummer, because I do miss the guild.

Jun. 11th, 2011 11:17 pmJust finished watching the Back to the Future trilogy for the first time in I don't even know how long. All I know is we used to have all three on a single VHS cassette and I haven't seen the movies since VHS became obsolete.
So I got the DVD box and watched 'em with my sisters. :3 My youngest sister had never seen 'em before either, so I think it was high time she did.
For the record, I blame everything on Telltale Games. They're really good at reeling me in by offering free downloads of the first episode of a multi-part game, and this time it was the BTTF adventure game. =/ So I had to buy the movies and the rest of the game.
In other news, I've been painting for my exhibition in August and I hurt my right index finger yesterday, which is making life surprisingly hard.

Words mean things!
May. 14th, 2011 06:49 pmDear Finland, please stop using the word "racism" as a synonym for discrimination. Racism is discrimination, yes, but if discrimination has nothing to do with race, then it isn't racism. It's really not that complicated.
I'm not even exaggerating here. "Age-racism" just may be the most common term for ageism over here. And I know at least one person who thinks the word racism also covers sexism. Today I read an article that used the term "personality racism" to describe a situation where a less than ideal personality may prevent someone from passing an entrance exam.
And okay, racism - or rather, the Finnish word "rasismi" - is a loanword and I guess a lot of Finns don't immediately see the word "race" in there like an English-speaker would. And I suppose it's a quick and easy way to get the message of "it is wrong to hold this belief" across, because unlike many other -isms, the vast majority of people understand that racism is wrong. But the word has a specific meaning and there are already other words that mean all those other forms of discrimination that you're incorrectly filing under "racism". Learn those words. Use them.

Apr. 22nd, 2011 07:27 pmFor the past week, I've been immensely enjoying Dragon Age 2. First Dragon Age I've ever played, too, though I am considering hunting down Origins in some discount bin.
Anyway, it appears a number of things have been changed story-wise, and some fans are Not Pleased (though when is the entirety of any fanbase ever satisfied?). I've been reading about the retcons, and they don't seen all that horribly RUINED FOREVER to me. Then again, I am a Warcraft fan. The amount of retcons I've accepted between Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and WoW: Cataclysm has probably done a lot to desensitize me for such things.
Anyway, I daresay that even if I had played DA before, and even if I did find the retcons objectionable, I'd still enjoy the game. BecauseVarric's chest hair is mesmerizing the characters are so great.

Mar. 21st, 2011 02:04 pmI'm sorry, WHAT?
This is such a bizarre defense. The whole point of insults is that they belittle their target in some way. When people liken other people to animals, they do not do it to make the insulted party question their species, they do it to imply that they have the same amount of importance in society as an animal would.
Another claim I heard today is that "bitch" isn't sexist because it's used to insult men, too. Sure it's said to men, too, but think for a second about what the implication is when a man is called that. It implies that he is weak-willed and submissive, in other words, not in possession of traits that are considered manly. "To make someone your bitch" is to make them submit to you. The word is sexist even when used towards men, because it likens them to women (who are simultaneously likened to animals) and in order to be insulting, there needs to be an underlying notion that women are inferior to men, which is what sexism is.
Is "faggot" also not a homophobic insult because it's used towards straight men, too, and most of them are confident enough in their sexuality that they know they are not homosexual?
I just. I can't follow the reasoning of these people.
