Saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 today. Definitely one of the better Potter movies, if not the best. (hard to judge before I've seen it a few more times)
And I have to confess that in my eyes Movie Snape >>> Book Snape, and not just because of Alan Rickman's pretty eyes.
See, I rather liked Snape's character for the first six books, when I thought he was simply an unpleasant dude who nevertheless wanted to do the right thing. The series of memories that Snape leaves Harry near the end of Deathly Hallows made me change my mind. In the book, it reads to me as though Snape had a very unhealthy obsession with Lily. The memories made me see him as this rather pathetic creep who was incapable of ever moving on, from anything, and whose good deeds weren't truly sincere. The movie version cut out a lot of the bits that made me go "yeeesh" in the book and in that version, it doesn't feel like Snape's entire life revolved around his wanting Lily for his own, but instead like he cared for her happiness and valued her memory.
And yeah, okay, the fact that it's Alan Rickman probably helps.
Also, I'm not sure if Neville/Luna was in the books? Not that I'm complaining, because they're adorbs, but yeah.
