I was going through my youngest sister's DVDs and I came across Cinderella 3: A Twist in time. I realized I'd never actually watched it and figured there'd be worse ways to spend an evening.

And it was actually mostly OK. The animation was solid overall and actually pretty neat at points, and the Prince is suddenly the most hilarious thing.

And this is now my response to everything.

Niin ja Harry Potter

Saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 today. Definitely one of the better Potter movies, if not the best. (hard to judge before I've seen it a few more times)

And... )

I am sorry, Robert Downey Jr. You will never be Sherlock Holmes to me. I was considering seeing the new movie for Stephen Fry as Mycroft, but I just saw the trailer and it killed my interest.

I get the feeling I might be able to enjoy these movies if they were just inspired by Holmes and the main character was called something else entirely. I know the whole point is that it's supposed to be a re-imagining for a 21th century audience, with lots of explosions and gunfire, but it just doesn't feel right to me.

Just finished watching the Back to the Future trilogy for the first time in I don't even know how long. All I know is we used to have all three on a single VHS cassette and I haven't seen the movies since VHS became obsolete.

So I got the DVD box and watched 'em with my sisters. :3 My youngest sister had never seen 'em before either, so I think it was high time she did.

For the record, I blame everything on Telltale Games. They're really good at reeling me in by offering free downloads of the first episode of a multi-part game, and this time it was the BTTF adventure game. =/ So I had to buy the movies and the rest of the game.

In other news, I've been painting for my exhibition in August and I hurt my right index finger yesterday, which is making life surprisingly hard.

Toy Story 3 was great. (Yeah, Finland's always little late with these movies. I guess the dubbing takes time, and they don't seem to want to release movies that might do well during the summer.)

I do not know how Pixar manages to avoid failure time after time, but they do. I don't mind telling you, I teared up a little towards the end. This is the great thing about sequels; they're rarely any good, but when they are, they're usually great. Also I'm more into 2D, but man the animation was fine. I particularly enjoyed the was certain toys moved not like humans - but as if they were actual toys with limited flexibility.

A self-respecting adult would be a little embarrassed about gushing over a children's film. Good thing there are none here.

Since I've been on a Sherlock Holmes kick lately, I decided to see the 2009 movie, which was good enough a movie, I guess, but just didn't feel like a Sherlock Holmes movie to me. :( Don't get me wrong, I didn't mind the plot or the action scenes, but the massive property damage felt out of place.

I've no issue with Watson's portrayal, and although I don't appreciate making Irene Adler into a career criminal, I have to admit that she kind of kicked ass too. Despite being made into a love interest. Again. The special effects were neat enough, too even though the animation of some CGI objects was a bit off to my eye, and even though lot of the showy explosions and whatnot felt gratuitous.

But the real problem for me was Holmes himself. Now, Downey acted well, but there's only so much he could do about a script that didn't do the character justice. And then there was his appearance. Holmes in the books has his eccentrities, but I just can't buy a Holmes who makes no effort to look presentable. Watson and Holmes in the film often seemed roughly equal in intellect, too, which just should not happen. Now, Watson's not the idiot he is commonly portrayed as, so his level of intellect in the film seemed appropriate enough; It was Holmes who seemed to have been dumbed down. Holmes is a kind of a Marty Stu. He's supposed to be so far above mere mortals in his mental capacity that anyone capable of outwitting him is quite extraordinary in their own right. It's the very core of his character. Not so here. He is outwitted entirely too frequently - granted, often by characters who are supposed to be his match, but even then with laughably simple methods.

Now, I admit, I've been watching the Granada series with Jeremy Brett recently, so it was virtually impossible for any other Holmes to meet my expectations with Brett's portrayal (and such portrayal!) so fresh in my mind, but given the limits placed upon him for this film, Downey could not have outdone the foggy recollection I have of Basil Rathbone's version.

Dark Harbor is a pretty dumb movie.

It's poorly cut and the narrative flow is jerky, and not in a good, mood-establishing way. None of the characters have any real depth despite the fact that every word they say is loaded with meaning, and they talk a lot. To top it all off, the twist makes very little sense even with all the foreshadowing which, to the movie's credit, is subtle enough, but doesn't really make sense once Fridge Logic sets in.

If you're going to do a... thriller, as this movie claims to be, you need a little more for suspense than playing unfitting music while Alan Rickman fetches coffee in broad daylight.
It's not even a thriller, really. It's more like a drama, except the characters are uninteresting, so it doesn't work as a drama, either.

So, about the Tekken Movie...

[Error: unknown template video]

brb lolling forever. I keep forgetting that the blond guy with the beard is supposed to be Bryan. Also, someone American identify his accent (1:30) for me. From what I understand he sounded Texan in T5, but this one doesn't sound the same to me.

Also, this other one is totally fan-made and much more impressive, especially considering that there are about six different actors total in it.

J-Jackie Chan as Lei Wulong? That-that can't possibly be right, can it? How could a video-game movie manage something like that?
I don't even know where the Tekken fandom resides these days, so I've no clue where to look for confirmation.

I saw Prince of Egypt for the first time today, and it was amazing. Great animation, poweful scenes and amazing everything.

And I was reminded again that I want to watch every high-quality animated movie ever made. BECAUSE I'M JUST THAT INTO ANIMATION. I don't know what I'm going to do if I don't get into that school next year.
Okay, no, I know I'll be headed for the Kajak Game Development Lab, because I need to specialize, and if I can't do animation, I'll do video games, dammit!

Just saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Frankly, it was rubbish.

I mean, they cut out everything that explained anything. Clearly, they're not concerned about making a coherent movie anymore. They just want to throw fancy special effects at us and collect our money.

I'm not complaining about removal of scenes I liked, mind you (although that hapened too, a bit). I'm complaining about the fact that had I not read the book, I wouldn't have understood half it.

Sure, the source material isn't Dostoyevsky, but if you're going to put so much money into making a movie, you could at least make sure it comes out halfway decent.

That being said, I think Alan Rickman and Helena Bonham Carter were both amazing in this movie. I'm sure Maggie Smith would've been, too, had she been on screen for more than half a second at a time.

Sometimes living in the middle of nowhere kind of sucks.

Finding out that there isn't a theatre within a 50km radius of me that's showing Year One is one of those times.

The same thing happened with Watchmen.

And I never had any illusions of getting to see the Tekken movie (if it ever freaking gets released at all) in a theatre, either.

Movies I need to remember to see:

Year One: Look, I dare you to make a three-hour movie consisting of a single still image of Jack Black. I will want to see it. And as a bonus, this movie actually seems like it's going to be fun.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince: I haven't made it this far in the series just to give up at the second-to-last movie, dammit! And in any case I promised my mother she wouldn't have to go alone. and she promised to pay for my ticket

Took my baby sister to see Ice Age 3 today.

Usually the third movie is where things start to go downhill, so I was pleasantly surprised that it was actually funny. I think it was largely thanks to Buck that it turned ot to be so enjoyable. Amazing crazy weasel.

Saw Twilight yesterday.

It was actually a bit better than I'd expected, although that's not saying much, seeing as how I've only really heard bad things about the series. Sparkling vampires still make no sense (the sparkling was kind of underwhelming, too. If you're going to sparkle, then at least have the decency to bling like no tomorrow) and breaking into a girl's room to watch her sleep is creepy as all get-out.

Bella's actress constantly looked and sounded like she was cold. Edward's actor looked ridiculous with his stupid hair and was not at all hot. Life loves kicking Bella's dad in the teeth and I felt sorry for him.

However, watching this movie I realized that there is still something sensual in the neck-biting business for me. I'm mostly over vampires as a whole, but the biting scenes tugged at the fourteen-year old in me.

Oh, yeah, and the special effects were pretty lame. Whenever Edward used his leet vampire powarz, it all just looked so fake. Like running (he didn't seem to be be pushing off of the ground, just moving his legs back and forth) or jumping (the trajectories were usually way off).

SO! I'm still glad I went, because now I have some semblance of an idea of what Twilight is like. I realize that I'd get a better idea by reading the books, but I don't feel like it.

Just saw Shaun of the Dead for the first time in my life. Now there's a zombie movie worth seeing.

Although I did get a bit distracted by Bill Nighy at times. Never put Bill Nighy in a scene if you want me to pay attention to anything besides him.

Anyway, great movie. You should all see it if you haven't already.

Okay, so basically, if any of you have seen the animated movie Howl's Moving Castle but have not read the book? You ought to read the book. The movie just doesn't compare, not to mention that it only contains like one-fifth of the plot of the book. And what it does contain it distorts almost beyond recognition.

Oh, and I watched Sweeney Todd yesterday. It was kinda underwhelming.
Throughout the movie, I couldn't help but marvel at the odd colouring of the blood. It looked kind of... milky I think is the word I'm looking for. Too opaque and oddly light in shade, considering the high-contrast, low-saturation quality of the picture in most of the movie. The sideplot with Johanna and What's-His-Face felt half-hearted and faintly creepy. Most of the songs sounded pretty much the same and, well, neither Johnny Depp nor Alan Rickman sings half as well as they act (granted, both still sing way better than I do). Helena Bonham-Carter was pretty amazing, though.
Then again, this could just be that I haven't been able to take any sort of scary movies seriously for years. Perhaps I'm interrogating the ngenre from the wrong perspective.

Saw Mamma Mia! yesterday. It was... a bizarre experience.

It is really not an intelligent movie, and I respect that it was probably never meant to be. The plot was flimsy and the characters were two-dimensional at best. Forced drama, improbable behaviour... basically a terrible story.

Some of that was made up for with the ABBA songs (I love ABBA) and a couple of genuinely funny moments. Made the movie bearable, though I'll be in no hurry to see it again.

So, in short: Not a ride you want to bring your brain along to, but not nearly as bad as it would've been without the musical aspect.

Y so srs?

Just got back from seeing The Dark Knight, and I just... holy shit. It was so awesome. I fucking cried. I honestly did. I laughed, too, because the Joker has that kind of effect on me. One part of the mind goes "holy shit, ew, that's horrible!", while another is startled into a sort of terrified, but guiltily genuine amusement. Heath Ledger was such an amazing actor.

I know I asked for tickets to "the Batman"* at the booth, but really, that wasn't Batman's show at all. It was Joker's. And, to a lesser extent, Harvey Dent's, because anyone who's read the comics knew to keep an eye on him.

And the light of the sunset in the horizon looked so beautiful on my drive home. I wish I could draw a sky like that.

*somehow it came out easier than "Yön Ritari", the Finnish name for the movie.

It must really suck to be a prosecutor in Phoenix Wright's town. The guy ruins perfect records like nobody's business.

Though to be fair it's because he's always representing an innocent person.

In other words: OMFG I'M ALMOST THROUGH THIS GAME WHERE CAN I GET MOAR?

Also, my computer mouse is apparently about to click the bucket. The cursor keeps stopping at inopportune moments and it's probably only a matter of time before it ceases to function for good. I've all but given up WoW and Sims 2 as a result. It's probably just as well that I have a shiny new DS and PW and Pokémon to keep me occupied.

Plus, I'm going to see Dark Knight tomorrow. Excitement!

Oh, yeah, and I need to make a sketchpost sometime soon.
