Saw Mamma Mia! yesterday. It was... a bizarre experience.
It is really not an intelligent movie, and I respect that it was probably never meant to be. The plot was flimsy and the characters were two-dimensional at best. Forced drama, improbable behaviour... basically a terrible story.
Some of that was made up for with the ABBA songs (I love ABBA) and a couple of genuinely funny moments. Made the movie bearable, though I'll be in no hurry to see it again.
So, in short: Not a ride you want to bring your brain along to, but not nearly as bad as it would've been without the musical aspect.

Seriously though, it's keeping the same plot as the musical, which really is just a flimsy excuse to put a bunch of ABBA songs together on stage. I did ask my Mom, though, and it sounds like the stage version might be more fun than the movie.
I have to wonder whether it says anything about society's taste that we're going back to the same musical structure that was highly prevalent early in the 20th century.
