I need to relearn how to actually participate in online conversations again. Tumblr was so poorly suited to it that I just kind of stopped.

If you want random, drive-by advice from another Pratchett fan, the trick is to make yourself reply to people even if all you can say is "Yay!" or "Boo" or ":D" or whatever. Reply to comments, commit to replying to a couple of posts a day/week... and it just gets easier as time goes on. Look, here I am making a drive-by comment to somebody from Latest Things. Plus, your one-word comment will encourage other lurkers to take that scary first step.

Amen to that... I think I've talked to more people in the past week or so than in the previous two months put together. But being able to hold a decent conversation in the comments is one of the things I've dearly missed from ye olde LJ times :)

Oh man, this is such a mood. But I am actively trying to be more responsive to people, but it can be hard. I think I just get caught in my head thinking "wow that's a dumb thing to say, don't post that." I also had some... not so great interactions with people on tumblr so I pulled away from it. But, I digress... just know that there's at least one other person being hella awkward out there too. 😁

I've never had a really bad interaction on tumblr, but I've witnessed enough of them that I was always thinking "is saying this thing worth potentially attracting the attention of one or several people looking to wilfully misunderstand it just to pick a fight?". Often I decided it wasn't. So I sort of know where you're coming from with that.

Same here. Tumblr turned me back into a lurker, I just passively consumed content and never really interacted or contributed anything. :(

I mean, I used to own a blog and several websites? And posted on forums?! When everyone moved to LJ I followed and made new friends there. I created lots of icons and wallpapers that I shared with people, and even had a copycat who stole much of my work (that means you're "famous", right? lol). And if I saw an interesting post by someone (even someone I didn't know), I just ... left a comment! No problems!

Now, after seven years (?!) of tumblr I'm all ???????? halp how do I words. :P

(but oh the joy to able to choose icons again! <3)

I know right? I would write long, thought-out comments every day. Tumblr wasn't really conductive to that sort of thing.

And agreed on the icons! I need to fully update my collection one of these days.
