Well, I've only read Neverwhere, Stardust and Coraline. And the comic Sandman, which was darker than any of those. And I think you're right about the deaths (I remember the first one way too well, yuck :/).

Also true. And I think I've noticed a difference in the "darkness level" in Pratchett's own books as well. My theory was that it might have a lot to do with the setting, and in some part in how real world-ish it is.
For an example, bad things happen in the books starring Death and his aquitances, but somehow the Watch books often seem darker in some way. Or maybe it's just all the crimes :P.
